Then there is often a poor choice of the conductor. There was some improvement this season, but so much more can be done. Choice of vocalists often finds vocally miscast (mostly talented) singers or poorly balanced vocal casts. Truthfully I'm also finding some of Jon's vocal gimmicks in recent tracks to be, well, gimmicky, but he still consistently makes interesting hooks and is trying to push his limits and think outside the box.It seems to me that the main problem at the Met is lack of coherent focus on musical values. If you took songs from Artificial Selection, Afterburner, and what we've heard so far from Jackpot Juicer, it would not be clear that each of those songs belongs to a different album.Īll that being said, I still think that the most interesting ideas coming from the band right now are coming from members other than Tilian. I don't think that's really been the case since Artificial Selection. Just considering the Tilian era, you can listen to a song from Acceptance Speech, Instant Gratification, and Mothership and be able to discern immediately that each song is on a different album as they all have distinct identity. I mean, while they've still been making good music, I think in general DGD has been in kind of a rut for a few years now. It'd be just as unfair as a thing to say about them as well though. You could literally say the same thing about Jon, Will, Matt etc. It legitimately sounds like he wrote the vocal melodies in one go as soon as he heard the instrumental. Tilian's work on Tides of Man and his first few DGD albums show a lot of growth and interesting ideas, but all of his work from Artificial Selection and onward has been downright mediocre and I'd venture to say lazy. That is an absurdly low standard to hold vocalists to.Īnthony Green, Craig Owens, Vic Fuentes, Donovan Melero, Bradley Walden, and plenty of other vocalists in the genre (including DGD's former vocalists) do a much better job of diversifying their vocal melodies than Tilian does. I'm sorry but do you listen to any other artists in this genre? They are not "bound to sound samey".
